R.I.P. Keith Guru Elam July 17 1966 - April 19 2010

A legend of my generation sadly passed away this Monday at far too young an age. Keith Elam, better known as Guru from the hip-hop group Gang Starr, died on Monday from multiple myeloma (cancer). Elam was 44.

Guru was one of the most celebrated and respected voices in the hip-hop world. His trademarks included his raspy yet clear voice, his intelligent and well thought out lyrical content, all presented with such style and class. Gang Starr, which included DJ Premier, was well known and celebrated for their heavy sampling and addictive beats which created an extremely catchy sound, comprised of great hooks. Guru also mixed hip-hop with jazz to create the highly innovative and seductive Jazzmatazz project. A full obituary can be read at The New York Times.
