Michael Moore to receive John Steinbeck Award

San Jose, Calif. -- Filmmaker Michael Moore will receive the John Steinbeck Award from the son of the renowned author in San Jose tonight.

The award is given to writers and artists whose work embodies the spirit of Steinbeck's values and belief in the dignity of the powerless and exploited.

Past recipients include Arthur Miller, Bruce Springsteen, Garrison Keillor, Joan Baez and Sean Penn.

Moore, a controversial filmmaker whose works include "Bowling for Columbine" and "Capitalism: A Love Story," will be honored with the "In the Souls of the People" award by noted author Thomas Steinbeck.

Steinbeck has said his father was the "Michael Moore of his time." The event will take place at 7 p.m. at San Jose State University's Morris Dailey Auditorium.

Tickets are priced at $25 for general admission and $15 for students. Proceeds will benefit the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State University.
