Toronto: First city with green roof bylaw

From mayorjoe.ca:

Environmentalists, take note: Toronto is the first city in North America to have a bylaw which requires the construction of green roofs on new developments. Under Joe’s guidance as Deputy Mayor, Toronto’s city council adopted the bylaw in May 2009.

The green roof bylaw applies to new building permit applications for residential, commercial, and institutional developments made after January 31, 2010, and it will begin to apply to new industrial developments as of January 31, 2011. Depending on the size of the building’s roof, a different proportion of the roof must be green space.

City council practiced what they preach by unveiling the city’s newest and largest green roof on the podium roof of City Hall on May 29, 2010. Across Toronto, there are approximately 135 green roofs, on a mix of publicly- and privately-owned buildings. Along with the City Hall green roof, Toronto has also recently seen the unveiling of green roofs atop the Metro Toronto YMCA and the Hugh Garner Housing Co-op.

Additionally, Toronto was recently awarded the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ FCM-CH2MHill Sustainable Community Award for its green roof strategy. This award recognizes municipal leadership in sustainable community development, and gives national recognition to projects that demonstrate environmental excellence and innovation. Congratulations, Toronto, on being a green leader!
