Covering Aboriginal Issues (a critique of the media)
My name is Joyce Hunter. I am an award-winning journalist who lives and works in Northern Ontario. I've known for a very long time that the media does not do a very good job of covering Aboriginal People and their issues. I've been cringing over and over at the coverage I have been seeing in various media across the country with respect to Attawapiskat in particular (for many reasons. I go over them in the video). The video is actually a power point that I created (turned into a short video) that explains the troubles I see in the media. I'm asking my fellow journalists to PLEASE watch this video, take inventory of their short comings in this area and make changes where necessary. If you are not a member of the media, I encourage you to also watch this video. It will help you understand why you should demand better informed articles/broadcast news stories from the media on Aboriginal people and their issues. It will also help your ask the right questions with regard to what you see playing out in the media about what is happening with Attawapiskat as well as other First Nations across the country. I sincerely hope that my video is enlightening to you.
