Hung or minority parliament in Australia

It's extremely close right now, as the full results have not yet been tallied. Hopefully Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her Labour Party will be able to form a coalition with Adam Bandt, the first Green Party candidate elected in Australia, and with the other independent MPs. Opposition leader Tony Abbot is a total neanderthal, who not only does not believe in the science of climate change, but also rejects a woman's right to abortion and same sex marriage. He's a typical far-right conservative who worships the rich and corporations, rejects science, rationalism, and equal rights - a throw back to the 19th century. It's 2010, mind you.

Regardless, what's also evident is that Australia, just like Canada and the UK, desperately needs proportional representation. Although the Australian Senate uses proportional representation, its main parliament does not. Therefore, the Green Party, which captured 11.5% of the popular vote, only won one seat in parliament, and neaderthal Abbot could form a majority with 44% of the vote, and not 50%. The first-past-the-post electoral system is a total disgrace as it is clearly undemocratic.
