Peter MacKay's $1,452-per-night hotel tab

A taxpayer's advocacy group is questioning Defence Minister Peter MacKay's pricey hotel tabs during conference stays in Europe, which saw one bill reach $1,452 per night.

MacKay has faced criticism recently for documents that suggest he took a helicopter flight under the guise of a search-and-rescue training exercise, so he could leave an exclusive fishing lodge in Newfoundland to attend a government event.

Now, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has released new documents showing MacKay lodged in luxury during trips to Germany and Turkey.

During one stay in Munich, Mackay's bill was $1,452 per night during a two-night stay at an exclusive hotel. In Istanbul, MacKay's lodging per night was $770. The bills were released through access-to-information requests.

Meanwhile, MacKay's staff was able to stay in the same Munich hotel for only $276 per night, the documents state.
