Three goals for new consumer protection agency

Harvard University professor Elizabeth Warren, named to help set up the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is now holding a telephone conference to provide an update on the new agency.

Warren laid out the top three priorities of the new bureau: Make it easier for families to see the costs and risks of mortgages they are considering. Cut down on the fine print of credit card agreements. And using technology to tap into the experience of millions of consumers so the bureau can develop a rapid response to problems.

Warren says the agency has temporary headquarters in downtown Washington and she has met with consumer advocates, CEOs of financial institutions and community banks from Ohio to California.

“We’ve all been working around the clock since we came on board,” she says.
