Nick Clegg, you suck, seriously. You sold out proportional representation for run-off voting, or the "alternative vote". The alternative vote electoral system does not distribute parliamentary seats according to the percentage of the vote that each party wins in an election. Clegg and the Liberal Democrats could have demanded the inclusion of proportional representation in a national referendum as a conditional of their power-sharing agreement with the Conservatives. From the Mirror:
But Mr Clegg faced anger from all sides over other parts of a voting reform package announced to the Commons.
To loud jeers, he said a referendum on the alternative vote electoral system will be held on May 5 next year.
The current first-pastthe-post system could be swapped for the alternative vote (AV), where candidates are ranked and eliminated until one has more than 50% of the votes.
Electoral reform was a key Lib Dem condition for sharing power and fear they will lose the vote.
Mp Mike Hancock said colleagues were disappointed that full proportional representation, where parties are award seats according to their vote share, was not on the table.
He told the BBC: "Proportional representation is what the British people deserve. Tories are furious there will be a referendum."
