Mubarak steps down, Egypt’s streets erupt with joy

The streets of Cairo and across Egypt erupted into celebration after nightfall Friday as Hosni Mubarak stepped down as President of Egypt.

Vice President Omar Suleiman read a brief statement on state TV a few minutes after 6 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET), saying that Mr. Mubarak had decided to hand all presidential powers over to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

“In these grave circumstances that the country is passing through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave his position as president of the republic,” a grim-looking Mr. Suleiman said. “He has mandated the Armed Forces Supreme Council to run the state. God is our protector and succor.”

In Tahrir Square, hundreds of thousands of protesters burst into chants and cheers embracing each other and their success.
