Ottawa — The Harper government will get an opportunity to name two more Supreme Court of Canada judges with the surprise announcement Friday of the pending retirements of Ian Binnie and Louise Charron.
Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin revealed in a press release that Binnie and Charron informed the federal justice minister they intend to retire soon.
Justice Charron’s retirement is effective August 30, 2011. Binnie would take his leave on the same day “or if there is a delay in the nomination process, soon thereafter as his replacement is appointed,” McLachlin said.
