Bill Maher took on Islamic extremism in last night's New Rules segment on his HBO program. Maher expressed his support for the creators of the cartoon South Park, who received death threats from a fundamentalist Muslim group after depicting the Prophet Mohammad in a bear costume on the show. Maher's main point of contention was that the West is much more tolerant which upholds such rights as freedom of speech:
When South Park got threatened last week by Islamists incensed at their depiction of Mohammed, it served– or should serve– as a reminder that our culture isn’t just different than one that makes death threats to cartoonists: it’s better...The Western world needs to make it clear: some things about our culture are not negotiable, and can’t be changed.
